Factory built or cut down

10ft containers are not used in ocean shipping in large numbers. Most are either built new as storage units or cut down from a 20ft container. A factory built 10ft has its own frame and corner castings. A cut down unit has a new end wall welded in; done well it is perfectly usable, but ask which type you are getting and check the welds.

A 10ft holds tools, garden gear, small business stock or the contents of a small room. If you have the space, a used 20ft container holds twice as much and is worth pricing as well. More on 10ft shipping containers.

Under 50 miles$350 to $750
50 to 100 miles$500 to $1,000
100 to 200 miles$800 to $1,600
200 to 300 miles$1,200 to $2,000
Over 300 milesoften $3.50 to $5 per mile plus unloading

Small containers often come on a short tilt bed or a truck with a crane, which needs far less room. Site access, ground conditions and a crane, if needed, change the price. Worked examples are on shipping container transport cost.

Check before you pay

Ask whether the unit is factory built or cut down from a 20ft. On a cut down unit, look at the welds around the new end wall inside and out. Test the doors and seals, check the floor, and look for daylight with the doors closed.
