The usual base for homes and offices

Most container builders start with a one-trip 40ft high cube. It has the full 9’6″ height, factory paint and a new floor, and it has made a single voyage. The extra foot of height leaves room for insulation, a ceiling and lighting while keeping a comfortable clear height inside. See shipping container homes and how to build a shipping container home for what comes next.

For storage or a budget build, compare a used 40ft high cube or the premium grade, which cost far less.

A tilt bed truck needs about 100 feet of straight clearance to slide a 40ft container off. Site access, ground conditions and a crane, if needed, change the price. Worked examples are on shipping container transport cost.

Check before you pay

Ask for the manufacturing date on the CSC plate and check the paint and corners for transport damage. Container floors are treated against pests at the factory; if the container will become living space, plan to seal or cover the floor or replace it. Confirm the door orientation you need on site before delivery, because turning a 40ft container afterwards takes a crane.
