What an open side container is

An open side container has folding doors along one long side that open almost the full length, about 18 to 19 feet, plus standard cargo doors at one end. A reinforced side frame keeps the box rigid when the doors are open. Buyers use them for pop-up shops and bars, equipment and tool stores loaded by forklift, vehicle storage and workshops that need daylight and access along the side.

Open side units are built new for this purpose; they are rare in the used fleet. More detail on 20ft open side containers. If side access is not essential, a standard 20ft one-trip costs less.

A tilt bed truck needs about 60 feet of straight clearance to slide a 20ft container off. Site access, ground conditions and a crane, if needed, change the price. Worked examples are on shipping container transport cost.

Check before you pay

Open and close every side door panel and check that the locking bars line up and turn freely. Look along the side frame for twisting or damage from transport. Check the seals between the door panels, because that is where open side containers leak first.
